Your short game can make or break a round. This is where people lose the most shots. It’s also where you can recover if you’ve gotten off-track on a hole.

If you have serious golfing goals, than 70% of your practice time should be spent on the short game. I teach the full range of short game shots, including putting, chipping, pitching and wedge play.

I am effective at getting fast results that translate into a noticeable difference on the golf course. If you are interested in playing better rounds, let’s talk about how to build short game into your practice routine.

Physical Conditioning http://shanehanrahan.dev/physical-conditioning/ http://shanehanrahan.dev/physical-conditioning/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 15:14:07 +0000 admin http://shanehanrahan.dev/?p=31
In most sports, the benefits of physical conditioning are obvious. You can’t play soccer without having some level of cardiovascular endurance. Recently, health and fitness have been linked to success in golf as well.

Four areas to focus on: flexibility, strength, nutrition and endurance.

Flexibility is a key part of the golf swing. If you focus on only one area, consider making it this one. Think about how much your body stretches as you wrap into the top part of your swing. Even without strength, a flexible golfer can build coil that translates into distance.

It’s easy to get off track with a fitness routine. If you’d like to incorporate this goal into your golf program, I’m happy to help. I can provide training in health and fitness. I also have experts to whom I can refer clients if your goals involve more than I can offer.

Full Swing 101 http://shanehanrahan.dev/full-swing-101/ http://shanehanrahan.dev/full-swing-101/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 15:13:19 +0000 admin http://shanehanrahan.dev/?p=29
Full swing is the basic building block of a golf game. My philosophy here is simple:

The first step involves looking at a student’s set-up, including grip, stance, posture, ball position, and alignment.

Once a student has proper set-up, we dissect the motion of the swing. Using digital technology to record and analyze your individual movements, we will look at take-away, half-way back, and top of the swing.

After mastering these elements, the downswing follows naturally. I will look at your motion to impact and through to the top of your finish.

I use the latest digital technology to review your swing. I will record your lessons onto a private internet academy, thus allowing you to review lessons at any time. Being able to watch your lessons at home will help give you confidence and direction as you practice.

Working together, I will produce a reproducible golf swing that is consistent with your goals. You bring the practice and I guarantee that you will reach your goal.

Proper Equipment http://shanehanrahan.dev/proper-equipment/ http://shanehanrahan.dev/proper-equipment/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 15:12:40 +0000 admin http://shanehanrahan.dev/?p=27
Why is club fitting important? Is there really that much variation between clubs?

The fundamentals of a golf swing have a direct relationship to the fit of your club. If a club is too long, the golfer must stand up, thus negatively affecting their posture. Compounding the problem, the club now swings on a poor path. The resulting flight of the ball is off target.

So what is club fitting?

LENGTH - The length of the club should be set so the golfer is in an athletic posture. Using a club that responds to the correct posture translates into a swing that’s on plane.

LIE ANGLE - This measurement refers to the angle of the sole of the club on the ground. Similar to the flat edge of a hockey stick, it is how the club fits on the ground. If the lie angle is wrong, a golfer will struggle. Shanks, thin shots, fat shots – all of these errors have lie angle as a potential root cause.

SHAFT - Determining the proper shaft takes into account swing speed and ball trajectory. The faster you swing, the stiffer your shaft should be. The slower you swing, the softer the shaft. Proper fitting on the shaft improves ball flight by controlling where the shaft bends. The result of a properly fitted shaft is proper trajectory and spin on the ball.

HEAD DESIGN - There are many subtle variations of head shape available on a golf club. The correct head design for your game can be determined by looking at ball flight, distance and accuracy. Some head designs make it easy to contact the ball, but result in less precision afterwards. These clubs would be less desirable for a touring pro, but might be a better fit for a beginning golfer. Advanced golfers can benefit from head designs that may be harder to hit, but will allow greater control over spin, trajectory and accuracy of flight.

GOLFER SIZE - Physical measurements, specifically height and arm length, are an obvious element to proper club fitting.

GOALS
Do you play five times per week? Or five times per year? Are you a beginner or a tournament professional? Will you buy another set of clubs in a few years or would you like these to last a lifetime? Who *you* are and how much you want to spend are all important factors in selecting the right club.

To sum up, club fitting is a process that involves tons of details. As a PGA professional, I can help you navigate the options so that you wind up with the right set of clubs for you. My objective is to assist you in obtaining properly-fitted clubs that help you achieve your golf goals.

Trouble Shots http://shanehanrahan.dev/trouble-shots/ http://shanehanrahan.dev/trouble-shots/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 15:10:43 +0000 admin http://shanehanrahan.dev/?p=25
The category “trouble shots” encompasses all those shots where you are unable to take a normal swing.

Routine trouble shots happen when you are under a tree or if there is an obstruction in the path of your shot. Perhaps you need to be able to punch a ball low or move a ball high in the air. Many trouble shots put a premium on accuracy. There are different solutions, all of which I can teach you to execute.

There are also trouble shots that are not as easy to recognize. Even if you hit the ball in the middle of the fairway, there can still be issues with how the ball is resting on the ground. Perhaps it is an uneven or a downhill lie. Many golfers don’t recognize the difficulty that poor lies can present. Not only will I teach you to be aware of your lie, I will show you how to handle any situation.

Trouble shots can be intimidating. It only takes a few to add up to a “big number.” Fear not – we can put together a growth program that will give you the confidence and the ability to handle any trouble shot that comes your way.

Bunker Play http://shanehanrahan.dev/bunker-play/ http://shanehanrahan.dev/bunker-play/#comments Sun, 04 Apr 2010 15:08:16 +0000 admin http://shanehanrahan.dev/?p=22 Hole 9
For many players, ending up in a bunker can be an intimidating experience. Not being familiar with how to plan their shot, they set up with a broad goal of just getting out of the sand trap.

Bunker play is similar to other aspects of your game. There are fundamentals that give a fairly predictable cause and effect. Once you learn the parameters of sand play, you will have the confidence to get out of a bunker. You will have the ability to plan the location on the green where the ball will land.
